- Unusual Factors: Since Kemira is a 40 year old building there were a lot of different flooring systems that have been used over the years. There was old sealer and epoxy on some parts of the concrete floor that needed removing for us to apply the new product. This wasn’t an issue for our team though. The old flooring didn’t have a chance next to our 700 pound grinder which removed the previously used epoxy.
Kemira Chemicals Epoxy and Flake Project
Step 1: First, we ground the floors with our 700 pound grinder to remove the old flooring and make the concrete smooth. This took our team about two days to do. At first the old sealer and epoxy wasn’t wanting to come up. The trick to getting the old flooring residue up was pouring some water on top of it and then start grinding again. This added a little extra clean up time but Southern States Refinishing is determined to get concrete floors in the best condition they can be in. We believe a great prepped floor is what helps the coating make a durable and long lasting concrete floor.
Step 2: On the second half of day two we finally started edging. To get this done we used our smaller 400 pound grinder because it is able to get right up to the wall. Edging plays an important role with epoxy floors. Without it, the floor near the wall would still be rough and not take to the coating as well.
Step 3: Next, we cleaned up the floor by sweeping and vacuuming. The floor was finally ready for a primer coat of epoxy.
Step 4: After allowing the primer coat of epoxy to sit over night our team applied a tinted urethane for the body coat. We would roll out about six feet of urethane at a time. Then stop to throw in a custom blend of flakes that Kemira Chemicals in Marietta picked out just for their floor.
Step 5: Lastly, the floor needed a clear urethane topcoat. This helps the floor become scratch resistant, UV resistant, and extremely easy to clean.
