Polished and Stained Concrete Floors Cumming, Georgia
  • Project: Polished and Stained Concrete Floors in Cumming, Georgia at North Lanier Baptist Church
  • Size: about 4,000 sq. ft.
  • Address: 829 Atlanta Hwy, Cumming, GA 30040
  • Time: 5 days
  • Unusual Factors: Before we were able to get to work on the concrete floors our team had to remove the the tile and carpet. Another factor that was different about this project was that there was a daycare on the lower level of the building. We had to stop for two hours each day so the children could take their nap without being disrupted by the noise from our machines working on the concrete floor. Even though we had to stop each day it was nice to go get some lunch. Then we would make up the time by staying a little later each night to ensure the job would be done by the weekend and ready to show off by Sunday.

Removing Tile at North Lanier Baptist Church in Cumming, Georgia

Step 1: First our team had to remove the tile and carpet that was on top of the concrete floors. We used a tile stripper to bust up the the tile and filled them into large trash bags to haul outside into the dumpster. To remove the carpet Southern States Refinishing used a razor blade to rip it off the floor then pulled it up.

Step 2: After the tile and carpet was removed it was time to get rid of any residue they left behind. We used our 700 pound grinder(as seen in the picture above) to remove the thin-set mortar from the tiles and carpet glue.

Step 3: It was finally time to really start prepping the concrete floors to be polished and stained. First, our team had to ensure the floors were smooth. We started by grinding the floors with 16/20 grit diamonds. As well as, roughly hand grind all of the edges. After using the rougher 16/20 diamond grits we worked our way up to smoother 100 grit diamonds to grind the concrete floor.

Step 4: Then, Southern States Refinishing started using resin pads. The resin pads are what give polished concrete that shiny look by closing pores. Plus, they are much less abrasive than the initial diamond grinding process. We started grinding with 50 grit resin pads and worked our way through the steps until we finished with 400 grit resin pads.

Step 5: At this point our team was ready to stain the concrete floors in North Lanier Baptist Church in Cumming, Georgia. After the stain was on the concrete Southern States Refinishing put down densifier. Both the stain and densifier was applied using a pump up sprayer. Densifier helps harden the concrete and lock down the stain. It also helps close up the pores a little more and makes the concrete more dense, creating a tough and long-lasting flooring solution.

Step 6: We then ground the floor with 800 resin grit which is the final grinding step. It makes the polished concrete really pop and shine. After grinding the floor one last time we added a polish guard with a sprayer and spread it out using microfiber.

Step 7: To add more shine to these lovely polished concrete floors Southern States Refinishing ran over the floor with a propane burnisher. We then applied a second coat of guard and burnished the floor again for more shine.
